Soulful Donald plans tour to promote album

Johannesburg - Afro-soul singer and songwriter Donald Moatshe has released his fourth studio album, Something More. It’s a visual album that boasts collaborations with international musicians in a bid to elevate his music to globally celebrated art.

The singer has pulled out all the stops as the album features Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage, Saso of hip-hop trio Dreamteam and rising star Floda. The album’s release, just a few days ahead of Africa Day – celebrated worldwide on Thursday, 25 May – was well-timed.

Donald said he had invested a lot of energy and time into making sure that fans and music lovers enjoyed the mixture of sound and the creativity behind it.

“The album is all about giving love songs to all the women in our society. I just gave a little bit more of myself in this album; about how I feel regarding love, women and respect for women in our communities,” he explained.

“It is all about how we as men and women feel about each other, which is more of an extension of what I have always been giving to my fans,” he added.

Considering how bad this month has been in terms of the reports of women abuse, and how men have been heavily criticised for failing to protect women in general, Donald’s album might be the medicine South Africans need to find common ground – and nurse the gaping wound of mistrust between genders.

Asked how the collaboration with Tiwa Savage came about, Donald said she was always on his radar for a notable collaboration because she was one of his favourite African artists.

“Working with Tiwa Savage was a dream come true for me. We used to meet at events and talk about possibly collaborating,” Donald elaborated.

When he finally had his ducks in a row and approached her to get the project going, he was pleased to discover that she was ready to push up her sleeves and get on with the job.

“She agreed and came to South Africa and we clicked well. We went to the studio together to record this song and then shot the video,” he explained.

He said the music video was already being appreciated by many fans and was getting a lot of air play on all channels.

The singer is promising to stage his Red Mic Xperience concert again this year, adding that he was busy planning travel schedules for the rest of this year, which could include Europe and other African countries.

“We are working on a tour so that all my fans will get to know more about Donald and relate to my talent through this album.”

He said he was hoping that his talent would give fans more than just music – he wants to touch lives and inspire young people who want to be musicians like he is.

Donald is originally from Rustenburg, but promised a detour to his new home town Polokwane in his nationwide tour to refresh his support base and keep them dancing.

With all the drama going on this year involving record labels and their artists fighting over deals and contracts, Donald urged aspiring musicians to make sure that they understood the contracts they signed with record labels.
