South African actor Cobus Visser (70) dies

Cape Town - Celebrated South African actor Cobus Visser has died. He was 70.

Cobus was well known for his role in Fiela se Kind (1981), Susanna van Biljon (2010), Hond se Dinges (2009) and more recently Mollie & Wors (2013).

The popular actor played the role of Brand Louw in Willie Esterhuizen's latest comedy series Huis Lelieveld, which will premiere on kykNet (DStv 144) on Wednesday.  

His good friend and colleague, Liz Meiring confirmed the news on Facebook on Monday, writing: "Cobus Visser died early this morning. He is freed. Thank you to those who helped and cared."

"My heart has a big hole. We've walked a long road together for 35 years. But he is freed. And that is all the matters," Liz wrote.

Netwerk24 reported on Friday that Cobus had been admitted to the Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria after suffering heart failure.

On Saturday it was reported that he was in a semi-coma and on oxygen

Cobus also spent several years as a writer for soapies such as Egoli and Villa Rosa.

He is also known for his vocal work on numerous soundtracks, and did translation work for television programs and films, mostly from English and German to Afrikaans.
