South African celebs also took to the streets in the nationwide #Total Shutdown march, which aims to raise awareness of gender-based violence in the country.

While the 1 August marks the beginning of Women’s Month, many South African women have decided to spend this particular day taking a stand against abuse.

The likes of Thandiswa Mazwai and Rami Chuene marched alongside other women in this iconic event.

The 42-year-old songstress, who has always been at the forefront when it comes to advocating for women, shared in a series of tweets why she’d chosen to participate in the event.

“It is for the protection of OUR bodies! Everyday I wonder if I will be that woman lying dead in a ditch because some man wanted to show me “how to be a real woman”,” she tweeted.

Meanwhile, The Queen actress Rami and her Happiness is a Four-Letter Word co-star Renate Stuurman were among the crowd too.

Joining the movement too was academic feminist and author Pumla Gqola.

Pumla first marched in East London where she addressed the crowd, before moving on to Bhisho.

While Idols SA judge Unathi Msengana shared a snap on her Instagram of her dressed in all-black regalia, which she captioned: “#TotalShutDown Thank you ABUSIVE MEN of South Africa for forcing us start OUR month with THIS campaign! ENOUGH is ENOUGH!
“PS If you’re not abusive and yet keep quiet when your friends abuse women in your presence or you just know of it, you’re also TRASH.MAN UP.”
