The 10 biggest local shockers of 2016

Cape Town - It's been a very eventful year in the land of local celebs. 

There were slaps, breakups, hookups and even a hockey mom who went viral. It was a difficult task to whittle them down to only ten, but hey, someone had to do it! 

We count down some of the biggest shockers of 2016: 

1. Pastor of Doom

Prophet Lethebo Rabalago of Mount Zion General Assembly in Limpopo sprayed his congregants with an insecticide and posted the pictures on the religious organisations' official Facebook page.

According to the posts on Facebook, Doom (the insecticide used) brought healing to a woman - with a stomach ulcer - through God.

2. Kwaito legend Mandoza dies

Local Kwaito star Mandoza died at the age of 38 on 18 September. 

He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May of last year. Concern for Mandoza's health was raised after he was rushed to hospital twice in the space of two months.

3. 90% Local at the SABC

All 18 of the SABC's radio stations switched their music playlist ratio to 90% local music and only 10% international. 

This comes after the broadcaster says they've had "extensive" engagements with music representatives to put the spotlight on local content. 

The SABC's chief operating officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng then announced a concerted drive to rid the public broadcaster's TV channels of its remaining international content, saying that the 90% local content quota announced for radio will now be extended to its TV channels.

5. The hockey mom that went viral 

Margaret van Wyk left the internet buzzing after an image of her vagina she accidentally shared on the school's hockey mom's group went viral.

6. The Cassper and Boity breakup

TV personality Boity Thulo and rapper bae, Cassper Nyovest, officially called it quits after dating for five months. 

After weeks of speculation surrounding their whirlwind romance which included rumours of cheating allegations, Boity has come out to set the record straight.

Popular gospel singer Sfiso Ncwane died at the age of 37 of suspected kidney failure.

8. The "blesser" trend

The "blesser" phenomenon blew up our timelines on a serious level this year. 

We even found out about a stokvel in Hamanskraal which is known for attracting young woman in search of "blessers."

10. Pearl Thusi stars in Quantico

Pearl Thusi landed a role in the popular American series, Quantico, and has been living her best life in New York, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest stars in the biz. 

Pearl Thusi plays Dayana Mampasi, a driven, disciplined, type-A lawyer. After graduating top of her class at Harvard, she worked at an NGO for two years before joining her parents' Boston firm. But though she seems to have it all, Dayana struggles to fit in.
