The Big Dawg owns his Destiny

Johannesburg - For the month of August, the Big Dawg is gracing the cover of Destiny Man magazine for the second time – the first person to be accorded this honour.
As one of our most influential djs and radio personalities, Thato Sikwane, better known as DJ Fresh, continues to evolve, adding to his long list of accomplishments. Most impressive is the fact that he has been around for well over 20 years and managed to stay relevant.
The magazine celebrated by holding an August cover party at the rooftop area of Rockets in Bryanston on Wednesday night.
The pick of venue was great – if you didn’t tire yourself out hunting for parking.
Dressed in a Kisua tuxedo – yes, the brand is launching a menswear range – DJ Fresh worked the room like a proud host, greeting everyone as if he had known them for years. Almost every speaker made mention of his characteristic warmth.
Celebrating his success were friends DJ Capital, DJ Milkshake, DJ PH and Lulo Café, all gathered at the back, passing schoolboy comments. It was sweet to see how much they admire Fresh and have, understandably, used him as their benchmark for success.
Among the guests was DJ Euphonik, who said: “Fresh has the biggest heart in the world. We stopped at a petrol station and he tipped the petrol attendant R100. I asked why he would give the guy that much money and he said: ‘The more you give, the more you get, irrespective of who it is.’
“Another thing that I learnt from him is the importance of family ... Just from watching how Fresh handles his family, I have learnt that your kids and your friends are the most important things in your life.”
Listening to him was a tad uncomfortable, given that the tribute came just hours after Euphonik caused a stir on social media with an abusive tweet, apparently about his ex-girlfriend, Bonang Matheba.
“I love looking at people’s stories and trying to ascertain what it is that makes them tick,” said Khanyi Dhlomo, the founder and chief executive of Ndalo Media. She revealed that Ndalo would launch a television platform early next year.
“When we cover success stories like Fresh’s, we also look for that theme of positively impacting lives and making a difference ... We certainly didn’t have to look very far in your case,” she told Fresh, “with the incredible work you’ve done with your foundation providing 1 500 bursaries ... 1 500 lives changed.”
