Trevor Noah on his relationship with 'friend and mentor' Will Smith

Johannesburg – Comedian Trevor Noah stopped by the set of US talk show Good Morning America to chat about his latest Netflix special, Son of Patricia, his close bond with Will Smith and how Lupita Nyong’o was cast to play his mother in the movie about his life.

Chatting about Hollywood stars that he has formed friendships with since he took over The Daily Show, Trevor counted actor Will Smith as one of his close contacts.

“Will Smith has been someone who’s become a friend and a mentor in life. I grew up watching him and loving him,” Trevor told hosts Michael Strahan and Sara Haines, joking that he calls Will up every now again just to make sure that it’s really him.

In the interview Trevor also opened up about how Lupita Nyong’o was chosen to play his mother in the upcoming film adaptation of his memoir, Born A Crime.

“Lupita was on the set of Black Panther. She was reading my book, which I didn’t even know she had, and then she calls me and she goes: ‘Hey Trevor, it’s Lupita’. I said: ‘Hey Lupita, how you doing?’ And then she goes: ‘I want to be your mom’.”

The star explained that Lupita had loved his book so much that she had offered to play his mother in the movie. “I was like: ‘But there is no movie’. She’s like: 'There is now’,” he went on say.
