Johannesburg – Family and industry friends gathered at Hugh Masekela’s home in Killarney, Johannesburg to pay respects to the late Jazz Legend.

News of Hugh's death surfaced on Tuesday morning. The legendary trumpeter, who suffered a long battle with prostate cancer, was 78-years-old.

After arriving at Hugh’s apartment, visitors were quickly directed to the flat of the musician’s sister Barbara Masekela just a few meters away.

Industry greats, including Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semenya, and Mbongeni Ngema, all gathered in honour of Hugh.

Speaking to the press, Mbongeni says Hugh had touched the hearts of many people all over the world. Recalling a recent conversation they had, the writer says Hugh was happy. "He was making jokes, laughing and happy, like he used to do in the old days when we worked together."

"It's a great loss for the country and the world," he added.
