Durban - An uncle of beloved South African gospel icon Sfiso Ncwane says that he was a pillar of strength to all around him, always giving hope and support.
“Sfiso was a pillar of strength. We are, as a family distraught by his passing. He was more than just a nephew. He was a great support to all of our family members and friends,” Mduduzi Ncwane said on Thursday.
Ncwane was speaking at the memorial service for his nephew at the eThekwini Community Church. Thousands descended on the venue in the Durban CBD singing praise and worship songs. Sfiso Ncwane died of kidney failure on Monday at a hospital in Fourways, Johannesburg.
According to his uncle, the family was struggling to cope with his death.
“He always made sure that he helped out anyone he could. We are very saddened by his sudden death. We have to try to understand and accept the will of God.”
Speaking to media on behalf of the late Ncwane’s friends, Sandile Makhoba said it was a hard week for all who were close to him.
“We are very sad and it has been a hard week as friends and family. Although we have not seen Sfiso’s wife, I did speak to her on phone to check on the family. It is very hard on her. Sfiso's friends are here to support her and give her love just as her husband did.”
Mhlo Gumede another family spokesperson said that Sfiso was a “great man”.
“We expected this kind of crowd. He was a great man that was loved by all.”
