Johannesburg – At an exclusive gathering on Wednesday, former Bongo Maffin lead, Thandiswa Mazwai, signed a record deal with Universal Music SA.
The label will be distributing the stars new album, Belede, a jazz tribute album named after her late mother. In the presence of the media, the singer put pen to paper as she made the deal official.
Not one to box herself in, Thandiswa explained why she decided to release a jazz album.
“I think the thing that people have to accept is that an artist will change and go with the flow of what feels right to them. I don’t necessarily consider myself to represent any particular genre. I’m an artist, I think I have the kind of voice that can go into any genre, so why not mess around with it?”
She also let it slip that she is currently working on another album which should be ready in just a couple of months.
Congratulations on your new deal, Thandiswa!
