Based on recent years Big Brother seems to have had a higher relationship success rate than The Bachelor, and the African spin-off certainly had no shortage of couch cuddles and steamy showers.

Running for nine seasons, some "showmances" fell apart when the cameras stopped rolling, while others stood the test of time.

The original "social experiment" - let's take a look the Big Brother Africa couples who are still together, and those who just couldn't make it work.

1. MERYL SHIKWAMBANE AND MWISHO MWAMPAMBA

Meryl Shikwambane and Mwisho Mwampamba made Big Brother Africa history in 2010 when they became the first couple of the franchise to get engaged on the show.

While wedding bells rang over the loudspeakers in every room, certain contestants voiced their concern about the engagement, saying their relationship wouldn't last beyond the season.

But Meryl and Mwisho proved naysayers wrong when they tied the knot after leaving Big Brother house.

It's unclear whether the couple, who have a beautiful family together, are still together - but we're still hopeful for a fairytale ending.

2. MANDLA HLATSHWAYO AND LEXI VAN NIEKERK (Big Brother Mzansi)

Mandla Hlatshwayo and Lexi Van Niekerk caused a stir with they shared a steamy shower during Big Brother's notorious shower hour in 2015, and the couple went on to keep the fire burning years after the show aired, having welcomed a child together in 2019.

The couple capitalised on their new-found fame, starring in their own reality show Mandla and Lexi, which documented the pair's life following their departure from the Big Brother house.

The couple parted ways after the arrival of their child, but Daily Sun reported in April that the they had since reconciled.

3. QUINN SIEBER AND JENNIFER MUSSANHANE

Quinn Sieber and Jennifer Mussanhane met on the fourth season of Big Brother Africa.

The pair started dating after the show came to an end, and married after having their first child together.

The happy couple recently welcomed baby number two and couldn't be happier.

Don't you just love a happy ending?

4. KEVIN CHUWANG PAM AND LIZ GUPTA

Kevin developed a crush on Liz during the filming of Big Brother Africa: Revolution, but their love story blossomed after leaving the house.

Kevin proposed in 2010, and the couple tied the knot two years later.

In 2018 the couple spoke to a Nigeran publication Premium Times about the "secret to their lasting marriage," but based on social media activity there is speculation that the once happy couple has split.
