Zodwa Wabantu keeps Feather Awards lively

Johannesburg - Controversial dancer and entertainer Zodwa Wabantu mocked all her naysayers after winning the drama queen of the year award at the ninth annual Feather Awards on Thursday night at The Theatre on the Track in Midrand.

It was all glitz and glam on the pink carpet, but the night definitely belonged to Wabantu – even though celebrities such as Kelly Khumalo won two feathers, who looked like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz with her red dress and silver sparkly stilettos.

“It’s alright if you don’t find me attractive. I know I may not have the prettiest face,” Wabantu quipped.

She took to the pink carpet and swished her dress about, revealing her nether regions.

“But you see where the cookie is kept, I’m too fine!” she added, and the room went ballistic.

Her epic speech left her out of breath as she fired more salvos, revealing that “every time you see my face on a poster, know I got R40 000 for that gig – just know that”.

But she was not nearly finished – after a somewhat lacklustre performance alongside DJ Tira, she shocked the audience further by slapping her derrière.

“Those of you who call me a trailer, always attached to DJ Tira, shame! At least I’m a trailer attached to a big aeroplane, soaring high!”

Other surprises came in the form of Skolopad, who hit the event wearing a boerewors dress and with a bag of charcoal as a handbag.

During the ceremony, Skolopad made her way on to the stage uninvited – she didn’t win an award in any of the categories she was nominated for.

But former Muvhango actor Rami Chuene managed to get her off the mic before she did too much damage to her public image.

The ceremony, held to bestow honours on straight and LGBTQI celebrities for being feisty, was mastered by Lumko Johnson and Khanya Mkangisa.

The categories include fag hag of the year, the couple of the year, and the best-dressed man and woman, as well as drama queen of the year.

The pink carpet was also graced by rapper Dream Team’s Mthoko “Dash” Mkhathini, who presented the award for the hot chick of the year.

It was won by his current bae, Ayanda Thabethe.

The always disappointing rapper then put his foot in it by saying: “This year, I’m looking for her replacement.”

Lorna Maseko showed off a bit of her flexibility by bending over on stage, but her antics left the audience perplexed.

Aaron Moloisi from talk show Shift was given the nod, or snap of the fingers, for best-dressed man.

A string of awards was given out to people who were not in attendance, including athlete Wayde van Niekerk and businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo, who sent her emissary of good times and the president of the LGBTQI community, Somizi Mhlongo, in her stead.

Speaking on Kumalo’s behalf, Somizi jokingly said: “Base couldn’t make it, she’s cooking.”

The surprisingly subtly dressed Somizi added: “She is also attending four events tonight, Bonang [Matheba’s] birthday and Minnie [Dlamini’s] wedding,” which had the crowd in stitches.
