Nianell has finally spoken out about her split from her husband, Andrew Thompson. In an interview with YOU, the singer, who has been married for 14 years, described the marriage as her loneliest years.
She told the magazine, "For 14 years I was actually alone and those closest to me really knew about it. But anyone who listened carefully to the words of my songs since 2001 would have realised that."
She says the extent of her loneliness only hit her when she was in New York two years ago. She had arranged a romantic trip on a boat with Andrew on Valentine's Day. "At one stage Andrew went outside while I chatted to a British couple at the table. The woman asked if Andrew and I were happy. Without hesitation I smiled and said, 'yes, we're happy'."
She told YOU that she realised that she was lying to herself because she and Andrew had already consulted various counsellors. "I didn't put 100 per cent into the marriage - I put in 300 per cent," she said. But her decision to separate from her husband came eight months ago when he decided to move into their spare bedroom.
She said, however, that the split is on good terms. "We are very honest, polite and nice to each other even though it is painful. We wish each other all the best."
