Oscar Pistorius gets five years

Judge Thokozile Masipa has sentenced Oscar Pistorius to five years in prison for culpable homicide.

He was also handed a three year suspended sentence for unlawfully discharging a firearm in Tasha’s restaurant.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said the Firearms Controls Act states that Oscar will automatically be declared unfit to own firearm but then also told the court that this matter could be sorted out with the defence.

Gerrie Nel also added that he felt the court has done its duty. Defence advocate Barry Roux said that they had no opposing arguments to the consequences of the sentence regarding the firearm incident.

For the first time since the trial began Oscar Pistorius looked composed as his fate was handed down to him by Judge Masipa.

And that has brought the lengthy court case to an end.
