Johannesburg - It's almost one year since Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed in a botched robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's family home in Vosloorus. (Read more on that here)
The soccer star's death has left his family heart broken and struggling financially.
Senzo's dad, Sam Meyiwa, has revealed that his family are too poor to perform crucial traditional ceremonies for their son.
"Sometimes we even go to bed with empty stomachs. My son was a breadwinner," Sam told City Press.
Sam says that a lack of money and a family feud with Senzo's girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, has left the family unable to perform the ceremonies needed to have Senzo rest in peace.
"We need to perform ukubuyisa for Senzo but we don’t have the money," Sam explained.
Adding, "We need R10 000 for a cow and R650 for a goat. If we don’t do the ritual, my son will never rest in peace."
He confirmed to the paper that should the ceremony go ahead, Senzo's wife Mandisa and the couple's child would be in attendance, but would not say whether Kelly would bring Senzo's one year old daughter, Thingo, to the ceremony.
Meanwhile police are still investigating the murder with no answers to date.
