Family members, government officials and fans bid an emotional farewell to Senzo Meyiwa at his grave site in Chesterville, Durban. The Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain was honoured by the sports fraternity and others at the Moses Mabhida Stadium today.
Minister in the presidency, Jeff Radebe, minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula and others gave moving tributes to Senzo, who was murdered on Sunday evening. He was described as a hero and a person who made South Africa proud. His family said Senzo was very supportive and always had a smile on his face.
Another touching moment was when Orlando Pirates players took to the stage sing for their captain. Clad in black, the players surrounded the late star's coffin as they celebrated him for the last time.
The 27-year-old's coffin was carried out by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS). At the grave site Senzo's wife struggled to hold back tears as she prayed and bid farewell to her husband.
Senzo was laid to rest at at Heroe's Acre in Chesterville.
