The case against Zenokuhle Mbatha was withdrawn this morning due to a lack of evidence.
The 25-year-old suspect was arrested just days after soccer star Senzo Meyiwa was shot outside Kelly Khumalo's home in Vosloorus on 26 October. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and police confirmed that the suspect was positively identified in an ID Parade.
Zenokuhle made his first court appearance at the Boksburg Magistrates Court, where the magistrate withdrew the case.
The magistrate acknowledged that by withdrawing the case, he was about to anger many people but implored South Africans to respect the judicial process. The court ordered Zenokuhle's immediate release.
The NPA also admitted that it does not have enough evidence to take the accused to trial.
Investigations in Senzo's murder is still underway.
