We know it's the World Cup, and that means rescheduling of shows on the public broadcaster's channels, but Channel24 today revealed that SABC doesn't plan to keep most of it's Afrikaans shows!
The decision to move much loved Afrikaans shows like Fokus, Swartwater, 50/50 and Die Nuus from the more accessible SABC 2 to it's smaller sister, SABC 3, come as part of a larger language shift on the stations which have made hosting both Sotho and Afrikaans content on SABC 2 "unsustainable".
Fans of 7de laan and Noot Vir Noot need not worry though, the two shows will remain on SABC 2, the sole Afrikaans programs left on the channel after the changes.
This bombshell comes in the light of the backlash the SABC faced last week when Afrikaans viewers complained about the Afrikaans news being canned (without warning) during the World Cup, despite it being one of the most popular shows on the channel.
It makes little logical sense to combined languages on a channel when digital TV, which provides the potential for dozens more channels to be created, is said to be around the corner but, as usual, the SABC seem to know exactly what they doing with our TVs!
