Fact! South African movies rock!
According to Channel 24, the locally produced film Tula Tula has been nominated a whopping 12 times for the 168 Film Festival in Los Angeles, to be held in September.
Tula Tula is a medical thriller telling the plight of medical doctors in Africa. Director Shane Vermooten told Channel 24: “during the research for this film we spoke to doctors who told us of the horrific decisions that rural hospitals are often forced to make, such as, who receives medicine and who doesn’t and therefore ultimately, who lives and who dies". He adds, "this is made more heartbreaking by the fact that Malaria is both preventable and curable; but mismanagement, corruption and greed, at all levels in the supply chain, from the pharmaceutical companies, governments, and distributors, to doctors prevent the drugs from reaching those in need".
Shane is nominated for best director at the festival but the film has also gained nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Production Design, Best Film, Best International Film, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Design, Best Make-up and Best-behind-the-scenes.
Good luck guys! We can't wait to see all the award you grabbed when you get home.
