A year of highs and lows for Karlien and Derick

Johannesburg – It’s safe to say that 2015 was a turbulent one for singer Karlien van Jaarsveld and her ex husband, Derick Hougaard.

At the beginning of January, the couple announced on their social media pages that Karlien had miscarried at 19 weeks pregnant. In an emotional post on his Facebook fan account, Derick opened up about his heartbreak and the loss of his unborn daughter.

The couple, who have twin boys together seemed to be going strong despite the heartbreak. Karlien was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and hubby was by her side, rooting her on.

Just after she took the crown home, Karlien announced that she and Derick would be parting ways. The news was met by shock and disdain as prayer groups were established to support Derick. The couple’s fans also implored them to work through their issues.

Earlier in the year, Derick had spoken out about his battle with depression. Speaking to Netwerk24, Derick opened up about his marriage. "It doesn't always go well. It's hard. That doesn't make us abnormal," he said about his marriage to Karlien to the site.

Later, Derick was involved in a car accident and Karlien’s schedule was full with performances around the country. As 2015 comes to a close, it’s certainly a chapter friends close to the pair tell us that they want to close. And as for people judging them, insiders close to both Karlien and Derick say they just want what is best for their children, and wish that people would stop being so judgemental.

Bring on 2016, we say!
