Johannesburg - You know what they say: "If you can't join a gang, start one." At least that's what Toya Delazy has done.
The award-winning muso has been plying her trade over in the UK for the last few months, but returned to our shores recently to launch her own all-girl hip-hop crew.
It's exciting news, but if you thought that you could shoot her some suggestions on a name (like Toya and De Energetics or The Beef-Spice Girls), you should know that they already have a name: Klutch Kollective.
The Kollective consists of Toya and three of her former school mates: DK, Fiah and Genius.
Toya, who several months ago made headlines for her outbursts on the lack of recognition for female MCs in SA (more on that here), says she is humbled to finally see a conscious hip-hop movement in SA.
"It’s a humbling experience to finally see Klutch Kollective come into fruition. I believe SA desperately needs a conscious hip-hop movement and I’m certain the collective voices of women will be able to achieve this," Toya says.
And in case you were wondering what they sound like, give their first single a listen:
