Naija meets Mzansi

Johannesburg – Forget the AU. When it comes to African relations, they don’t come bigger than the musical romance between Nigeria and South Africa in 2015.

As the continent’s entertainment industry seems to grow smaller and smaller, the two nations have formed a bond that promises to get stronger in the next few years.

No-where is this bond clearer than in the music game where Nigerian and South African artists (especially hip-hop acts) continue to work together and frequent travel between the two nations.

The relationship spawned the mega hit All Eyes on Me in late 2014 and continued into 2015 with hits like AKA’s Baddest and the mega Juice Back v Roll Up remix showdown.

In fact, the commute between Joburg and Lagos proved so popular, that one Nigerian music entertainment correspondent claimed that AKA spent more time in Nigeria than at his home in SA, calling on the rapper to take a break before applying for a Nigerian citizenship.

But the relationship between the two nations was not exclusive to music, with one of Mzansi’s biggest celebs Bonang romancing Nigerian megastar D’banj. The pair teased fans before confirming their romance with a kiss at the MTV Africa Music Awards – only to deny the whole affair a few weeks later.

So, what does the 2016 bring for the Nigeria-South Africa connection?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: this is an empire.

Hollywood, who?
