Cape Town – You’ve probably seen the amazing video of Pegasus, the white Great Dane, pop up a few times on your Facebook news feed since last week.
The story of Dave Meinert and his dog, which has since gone viral worldwide, is actually proudly South African.
Dave is a local filmmaker who adopted Pegasus as a young puppy. The adorable puppy didn’t have a long life expectancy due to irresponsible breeders, who'd produced pups especially prone to health problems, including deafness and blindness, Huffington Post reported.
Dave decided he could provide a home for the sickly pup and looked after her. He captured their time together by filming her over a period of 5 months. The end result is truly magical to watch.

Few people know what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. It’s even more magical. Because Dave had to travel a lot and was worried his busy lifestyle was affecting Pegasus’ health, he decided to reach out to the Great Dane rescue community and asked for help. He needed someone to care for Pegasus while he got a more stable set-up.
Monique Burrows, a teacher who's active with dog rescue, offered to take her in, first as a foster, and soon after that on a permanent basis.
We’re happy to report that Pegasus is doing absolutely great with her new family and even has another Great Dane friend that’s stolen her heart.
Since the video has gone viral Dave has been overwhelmed by the response. "The last 48 hours has been insane," he told Channel24.
We absolutely adore this story of Pegasus and we’re happy that she’s healthy and comfy in a home filled with love.
