Behind-the-scenes: When SA talent goes viral!

Cape Town – When my colleague sent me a video of three ladies singing a Cape Flats version of Beyonce’s Irreplaceable I was intrigued.

I wanted to find out who they are, what their story is and what inspired it.

It comes as no surprise that Queen Bey’s hit song done in a uniquely Capetonian way went viral.

On Facebook alone it currently has over 263 000 views and it has been shared 12 530 times.

After a few emails, telephone calls and WhatsApp messages I managed to get the ladies in studio to perform the viral hit.

Watch it here:

Who are they?

Felicity Kiran, Anray Amasure and Lauren-Lee Bock make up the cast of Woman2Woman.

The show which will be held on 28 and 29 October 2016 celebrates woman by highlighting their experiences, their challenges and the importance of sisterhood through song.

10% of the proceeds will be donated to CANSA in support of Cancer awareness month.

What’s their story?

Each a solo artist Felicity, Anray and Lauren-Lee started out singing in church at a young age.

Anray and Lauren-Lee went on to study at the Cape Music Institute. They both write their own songs and have performed all over the country and overseas.

In March Lauren-Lee performed at two benefit concerts in the UK and raised R100 000.

Felicity refers to herself as the dinosaur of the group. She travelled Europe where she has performed in a number of shows. She has also worked with South African artists and also sang backing vocals for Kelly Rowland.

Their paths crossed when Felicity and Lauren’s manager made plans to host a concert.

The pair met Anray through the show’s director and the rest as they say is history.

What inspired the video?

It’s not the first time this rendition of Beyonce’s popular hit was done. The trio are in fact the 5th cast to perform it.

The version is the brainchild of the show director Ramaine Barreiro-Lloyd who created the song about six years ago.

They recorded three songs Irreplaceable, P!nk’s Dear Mr. President and Blu Cantrell’s Hit Em Up Style to promote the show.

But it was Irreplaceable that took on a life of its own thrusting them into the spotlight and making them a viral sensation.

What's it like being a viral sensation?

The cast have been overwhelmed by the amazing support that they have been getting from friends, family and strangers.

“It’s crazy! I didn’t want to be known as the ‘jou ma se girl’ because that’s not who I am. A woman actually walked up to me and asked me if I was that girl in the video and I shyly admitted it was me,” says Felicity.

Anray recounts an incident that happened to her at varsity.

“A group of guys walked past me and started singing, ‘stap links, stap links’. It was really funny.”

The trio gave us a sneak peek of what to expect of the show later this month.
