  • Meghan Markle has confirmed she will be voting in the 2020 US elections.
  • The Duchess of Sussex told Maria Claire recently: "I know what it's like to have a voice, and also what it's like to feel voiceless."
  • The royal family generally remains neutral and refrains talking politics. This will be a break in tradition for the royal family.

Meghan Markle will break royal tradition when she votes in the 2020 US elections later this year.

The royal family generally refrains from getting involved in politics. The royal website even says: "As Head of State The Queen has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters," adding that you'll never see Her Majesty voting or standing for election.

The same is true for other members of the royal firm. But as Prince Harry and Meghan forge their own path having recently put down roots in Santa Barbara in the US and signed with the Harry Walker Agency – which also represents the Obamas – the duchess has revealed she will, in fact, be voting this year in the 2020 US elections.

The Duchess of Sussex shared, along with 99 other influential women, why she's voting with Marie Claire.

The duchess said, perhaps connoting to her feelings leading up to her royal exit: "I know what it's like to have a voice, and also what it's like to feel voiceless."

She added: "I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And that opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all of our voices heard.

"One of my favourite quotes, and one that my husband and I have referred to often, is from Kate Sheppard, a leader in the suffragist movement in New Zealand, who said, 'Do not think your single vote does not matter much. The rain that refreshes the parched ground is made up of single drops.' That is why I vote."
