  • The Masire family is back to pick up the pieces, with Mogomotsi at the helm following Simon's sudden and untimely disappearance, in the second season of Kings of Jo'burg.
  • Mogomotsi pulled the trigger on Simon at the end of the first season after he killed his son as a sacrifice for the Masire mermaid.
  • Kings of Jo'burg season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

When Mogomotsi 'Mo' Masire (played by Zolisa Xaluva) pulled the trigger on his brother Simon, aka Vader (played by the late Shona Ferguson, who died of Covid-19-related complications in July 2021), in the final episode of the first season of Netflix original series, Kings of Jo'burg, viewers were left at the edge of their seats.

Now, with the second season streaming on the platform, questions will be answered.

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika's Duduzile Ramela, Connie Ferguson said the show was about to go into pre-production when her husband, Shona, died. She said the scripts had already been approved and were about to go into pre-production when they contracted Covid-19.

"We lost him, so we paused everything," she said in the interview.

In season 2, the Masire family returns to pick up the pieces and maintain their position as the rulers of the city of gold, with Mogomotsi at the helm of the Masire family following Simon's sudden and untimely disappearance.

4 things to remember before watching season 2 of Kings of Jo'Burg

  1. Mogomotsi returned from prison with all the intention of walking the straight and narrow path but is eventually drawn back into a life of crime. He wants the family to cut ties with the mermaid behind the family's curse.
  2. Keneilwe (played by Thembi Seete), the rose among the thorns – Mogomotsi and Simon – is involved in a forbidden relationship with one of the kings, Lester (played by Abdul Khoza).
  3. Mogomotsi discovers that Simon has a secret family, which no one else knows about except him when he decides to follow him.
  4. Simon killed his son, from his secret family, as a sacrifice because the Masire Mermaid, who is behind their family curse, was thirsty for blood.

Recently, Netflix held a traffic-stopping red-carpet premiere of the eight-part series at The Zone, Rosebank. Members of the public had a front-row seat to the festivities and a performance by award-winning rapper K.O.

In the interview with Ramela, Connie also opened up about being uncertain if she had the courage to continue with the show without Shona. However, she said they had come up with a story people would be "excited to watch".

In the interview, she said:

"I didn't even know whether I'd have the strength to continue with Kings of Jo'burg because it was a Sho project. He was so passionate about this baby. First of all, I didn't wanna let him down, and I didn't know if I would have the strength to do it without him because he was a big part of it."

But, six months after Shona's death, Connie said she started having conversations with the show's other producer Samad Davis. She said Davis told her, "Sis, we can do this".

"So we went back, got together with Sabelo - Sabelo is our writer for Kings of Jo'burg - and he was very excited about how he could redirect the script," she told Ramela. "I think we managed to come up with an exciting story that people will be excited to watch. We're excited for them to see Kings of Jo'burg season 2."

Despite the difficulties with the loss of its executive producer and lead actor, Connie said she was "very, very excited about this project".

"It was hard to do without him, but at the same time, I just had this thing that I was going to do this for my husband and for me."
