RESIDENTS of 20×20 informal settlement in extension 14, Soshanguve, Tshwane, are calling for the area to be formalised.

The affected residents marched to Tshwane House on Thursday, 11 April, to hand over their memorandum of demands.

It included demands for water, electricity and proper roads.

According to residents, they're tired of being illegally connected to the power grid as this puts their and their children's lives in danger.

They claim this is the third time they submitted their grievances but received no response from authorities.

They called for Mayor Cilliers Brink to receive the memorandum.

They chased City of Tshwane MMC for Utilities, Themba Fosi, away and demanded to be addressed by Brink.

According to Make It Happen Foundation's managing director Herry Masindi, residents want service delivery in the area.

"We're disgruntled members of the community. We're disappointed with the city's handling of service delivery issues," Masindi said.

He further said they have noted systematic discrimination and a lack of services such as electricity, water, sanitation and road infrastructure in the area.

"We demand immediate installation of water and electricity in Moshate Gardens-M17, 20x20 Extension 14 and surrounding areas, as well as the introduction of road policing in our townships and the Tshwane Metro Police to curb crime and drug trafficking."

Themba Mohlala, chairman of Moshate Gardens and Extension 14, said: "We're demanding proper roads because the community is struggling with transport. We don't want illegal electricity connections because it kills people and animals."

Community leader, Sakie Manamela said: "We demand service delivery."

The mayor's spokesman, Sipho Stuurman said MMC Fosi was the right person to receive the memorandum as he deals with water and electricity issues.

He said Brink was engaged with other city work.

"Unfortunately, the community turned Fosi away even though he was the right person and is a Member of the Mayoral Committee," he said.
