Cape Town - British and European royalty attended the Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle on Monday.
According to the royal website the order was instituted by King Edward III who was inspired by the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table that he set up his own group, called the Order of the Garter.
The Order is granted to both male and female and use to be limited to aristocracy, but now they are chosen from different backgrounds, in recognition for their public service.
St Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle is the spiritual home of the order where the knights have their own stall.

The Order includes Queen Elizabeth II and other several members of the royal family including the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge.

The King and Queen of Spain attended this year's ceremony. King Felipe VI of Spain has been invested as Supernumerary, or 'Stranger' Knights of the Garter.

Also in attendance was the King and Queen of the Netherlands. King Willem-Alexander was invested as a Supernumerary Knight of the Garter.

Other royals in attendance were the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of the Countess of Wessex.
