Cape Town - Prince Harry became emotional on stage recalling the pregnancy of his wife, Meghan, while speaking at a charity event.

The Duke of Sussex was comforted by his co-host, TV presenter Gaby Roslin, as he choked up mid-speech and apologised to those in the audience, Metro UK reports.

Prince Harry and Meghan attended the WellChild awards in London on Tuesday evening where the duke spoke about his journey into fatherhood, Mirror UK reports.

"Last year when my wife and I attended we knew we were expecting our first child – no one else did at the time, but we did," he recalled.

"And I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.

"And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own."

It was an evening fraught with emotion for Prince Harry and Meghan as they praised the courage of seriously ill children and their families, Hello! Magazine reports.

As patron of WellChild, Prince Harry paid tribute to the young winners of each award category and presented the award for most inspirational child.

The Duchess of Sussex, who wore a bottle-green dress to the event, spilled details about baby Archie’s first playdate later in the evening and even confirmed the five-month-old’s hair colour!

While speaking to parents at the event, Meghan revealed that little Archie did indeed have red hair.

"He definitely is [a redhead]; you can see it in his eyebrows," Harry confirmed.
