Usually, when we think music videos, we think YouTube. But it seems Facebook wants a piece of that pie.
The social media giant has officially started rolling out music videos on its platform in the US, India and Thailand. This new addition "will allow Facebook users to discover, watch and share music videos from a wide range of artists," TechCrunch reports.
According to the publication, for its US launch, Facebook has also expanded partnerships with some of the country's biggest record labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and more.
But it's not just about being able to watch music videos, Facebook wants to create an entire experience around it.
Facebook's VP of music business development and partnerships, Tamika Hrivnak, says while other companies are offering "listening experiences", Facebook will be developing a "completely unique space" in music, Variety reports.
Tamika further added that it's about "the experience of music and the conversation around it."
Facebook's new music experience will also include a hub in the Facebook Watch section where you can discover music videos through playlists or by exploring your favourite genre.
According to Statista, Facebook is the most popular social media app worldwide (ranked by number of active users) with YouTube following close behind.
Facebook has not yet announced any plans to launch the music video service in South Africa.
