London — Meghan Markle will spend the night before her wedding to Prince Harry at a country hotel famed for its role in a 1960s scandal that shook Britain's political and social elite.
Kensington Palace said on Monday that Markle and her mother Doria Ragland will spend the night of 18 May at the Cliveden House Hotel, the former residence of Lord Astor.
In 1961, War Secretary John Profumo met 19-year-old dancer Christine Keeler during a party at Cliveden. Their affair almost toppled the government when it was revealed that Keeler had also slept with a Soviet naval attache.
The hotel even promotes a "Profumo Affair Break " on its website. It's 10 miles (16km) from Windsor Castle, where the 19 May wedding will take place.
Harry will spend the night before at the Coworth Park Hotel with his brother, Prince William.
