  • The 47th Daytime Emmy Awards will take place on Friday 26 June.
  • The ceremony will air on CBS; this will be first time it will be broadcasted on television since 2015.
  • The Bold and the Beautiful has bagged 13 nominations including Best Drama Series.

On Friday night The Bold and the Beautiful, already the winner of multiple Daytime Emmy Awards, heads into this year's ceremony with a further 13 nominations across a range of categories including writing, directing and costume design.

We caught up with three of the soap's leading ladies, all nominated for their performances, about red carpet glamour and what to expect at this year's 'socially distanced' awards.

The 47th Daytime Emmys will see Katherine Kelly Lang and Heather Tom go head-to-head in the Outstanding Lead Actress category, joined by Annika Noelle for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

With five previous awards Heather, who plays Katie Logan, remains the only star in Daytime Emmy history to win in all three acting categories – Younger, Supporting and Lead Actress – but despite having five Emmys already on her shelf, each win always takes her by surprise.

"When I have won, it's always been a shock," she admits. "In 2012, I was five and a half months pregnant with my son Zane, and when they called my name, Zane started doing backflips inside me. I don't know whether it was the kick of adrenalin from winning or what. I had to compose myself enough to get up and walk as gracefully as I could, in heels and pregnant, up the steps to the microphone to accept the award and give my speech. It was overwhelming in many ways."

Although the ceremony will be broadcast live primetime on CBS across the US on 26 June, this year participants will be joining from their homes due to Covid-19 restrictions. Has this meant a rethink for all three actresses in terms of their usual style choices?

"We've never done it this way before," acknowledges Heather. "But it's on national broadcast television, so I'm obviously going to put some effort into it and do something appropriate for the time and place."

Katherine Kelly Lang, who as Brooke Logan has been part of the cast for a remarkable 33 years, is planning "something simple, comfortable and natural" while Annika Noelle is torn. "Star Wars pyjamas versus red carpet glamour? It really is a toss-up," she laughs. "I guess we'll have to wait and see which way I go!"

It's a first-time Emmy nomination for Annika, who as Hope Logan had a particularly dramatic storyline on the series over the last 12 months. What was her favourite moment for her character? "It would probably have to be the quiet moment between Hope, Beth and Liam when they are finally reunited as a family. It's a touching scene with beauty in its simplicity, and it's actually one of the scenes I submitted for my Emmy reel."

When they next have a chance to walk a real red carpet, all three admit they have some favourite fashion names to help them bring A-list glamour to any awards.

Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad are Annika's dream designers for an extra-special event. "I would love to wear one of their dresses." For Katherine, it's The Royals Paris of Beverly Hills.

"The gowns are glamorous, elegant and sophisticated. They use a lot of sequins and take inspiration from a lot of different styles. They have a wow factor, yet are comfortable to wear."

For Heather, it's also about attitude. "The only person who can make me feel great on the red carpet is me." Favourite designers? "Alexander McQueen, Prada, Armani, Gucci, Chanel. Oh, and don't forget, I love shoes. The shoes must fit, and I must be passionate about how fabulous they are; Manolo Blahnik, Badgley Mischka, Prada, Christian Louboutin."

As dedicated Bold and Beautiful fans will know, the series is set in the Los Angeles fashion world and has just been renewed for a further two years, taking the daytime drama through to its 35th season. With so much collective experience of fashion-focused onscreen moments and showbiz events, what top tips can they give about being camera-ready?

For Katherine, it's all in the planning. "Time is your friend until it isn't. Don't wait until the last minute to start selecting a dress. I usually get a facial the day before. The day of the awards ceremony, start early, it takes all day to get ready. I start at 9:00 a.m. in the morning; hair, makeup, wardrobe. There's nothing worse than arriving frazzled."

And the dress? "Go for something dramatic and spectacular, but make sure it's practical. You have to be able to move in it. Getting in and out of a car, going to the bathroom, walking down the red carpet. Make sure it's appropriate for the weather. The shoes have to fit properly and be comfortable. Awards ceremonies last hours and hours. You're going to be wearing this outfit for quite some time!"

"If being sexy is wrong then I don't want to be right," admits Heather. "Push good taste to the limits, but never go over the edge and never underestimate the element of surprise. Don't repeat yourself and choose a dress that has something a little shocking about it."
