Cape Town – It’s almost time for the annual trek to the Klein Karoo to celebrate everything Afrikaans in the form of music, art, theatre and dance.
The 2016 KKNK (Klein Karoo National Arts Festival) kicks off this Thursday, 24 March in Oudtshoorn and will run until Wednesday 30 March.
And while it can be quite tedious to sift through an entire festival programme, we've made it quite easy by highlighting the best in music the festival has to offer.

1. Amanda Strydom – ’n Rugsak Vol Robyne
DEBUT Contemporary Music
With: Amanda Strydom and Coenraad Rall (piano).
In celebration of her 60th birthday and her 22nd KKNK, Amanda Strydom brings ’n Rugsak vol Robyne to the festival. This production includes songs from her wide repertoire, as well as favourites in French, English and Dutch. The songs are combined with stories from her life and her career spanning 37 years. As always, the show includes a mixture of humour and pathos.

My Wonderyears is a musical adventure showcasing the life and times of one of Cape Town’s most loved sons, Loukmaan Adams. It captures the extraordinary journey of a boy becoming a man in a time marked by revolution, movement and music. The show conjures up feelings of excitement, exploration and nostalgia. It is funny. It is brave. It uncovers and discovers his true voice and story. A must-see!

3. Naledi Berge Nog So Blou

One of the most known opening lines in South African stories must be “The Boer, the Britt and the Scott walk into a bar.” But what is the actual influence that these three characters had on each other? South Africa boasts a colourful history, and this is complimented in the history of our local music. Our music is a combination of inherited, stolen, bred and locally imagined. It has survived wars and captivity, lived through revolutions and elections, been through transformation and suppression, been toyi-toyed, sung around camp fires and in concentration camps, and there has been kwaito, skouspele, music and lyric, voëlvry, anarchism and nihilism.

4. Laurika Rauch – Nie As Ek Sing Nie

With: Laurika Rauch, Devereaux van der Hoven-Oosthuizen (piano), Juan Oosthuizen (guitar) and Vernette Rautenbach Wessels (background vocalist).
When asked what the title of her autobiography would be, should she ever write one, Laurika answers with no hesitation: Nie as ek sing nie. Because when she sings in front of an audience, all sorrow, pain and uncertainty is lost. This production (Clover Aardklop’s most popular performance in 2015) contains biographical elements while the music takes you back to where it all started.

5. Zoid Afrika Afskopkonsert

With: Karen Zoid, Francois van Coke, Anneli van Rooyen, Kahn Morbee (lead singer of The Parlotones), Corlea Botha, Jannie Moolman, Voice of Angels Choir and special guest stars.
This is the concert of the year. With her popular TV series on kykNET, Karen Zoid and her guests weekly feature at the top of the South Africa iTunes hit list. The show includes a compelling mixture of melodies and rhythms with old and new hits.

With: Luna Paige, Hatchetman and Nick Turner.
Three unexpected musical groups get together to intertwine Ingrid Jonker’s love poetry with dramatic and musical interpretations of Andre P Brink and Ingrid Jonker’s love letters to each other. A heartbreaking and intimate reproduction of longing, of that which was forbidden, destruction and the fearless rapture of love.

8. Mystic Nagte

A celebration of Valiant’s milestones – the 20th birthday of his debut album, Die Mystic Boer, and the celebration of his brand new album, Nagrit. A selection from both albums will be performed together with his band.

9. Rymklets Van Oos Tot Wes
