Cape Town - Gospel star Veliswa Skeyi is coming back to the music scene with a bang.

Veliswa recently released her 13th album called Uloyiso ngoKrestu after a five-year absence from the music scene.

The reason for her absence? She says she has been busy with school. The former Lord Comforters lead singer was studying toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in communications.

"From 2012 to 2017 I was at school and I wanted to achieve that degree," she proudly shares.

However, another main reason for her hiatus was that she wanted to come back when she has something to say.

"I was waiting for God to give me a message to sing about. All the 13 songs are prayers," she explains.

Veliswa says this album is testimony that God has been carrying her through all these years and she hopes people will listen to it and trust Him to do the same for them.

She says the message she wanted to put across was trust in God.

"The album says you must follow in Christ’s path. You must give Him the power to carry your burdens. If it wasn’t for Him I would have not been where I am today. I have been in this industry since 1996 and through Him I had managed to weather the storms," she says.

Being away for so long had her wondering how her fans will receive her again.

"I had that fear that people would forget about me. I was surprised that the hall at the launch of the album was full to capacity. It showed me that people still love me and want my music," she admits.

But how is her music now that a lot has changed since she last released an album? She says there’s no need for people to panic as they will still recognise her authentic style.

"The Veliswa sound is still there but I also tried to incorporate other sounds. I had other influences of sound that will appeal to different people," she says.
