Cape Town - Local singer Zahara has recently been getting candid about her personal battles and struggles with the music industry, in particular, her former record label which she is reportedly in the process of filing a lawsuit against.
This comes after she alleged that she wasn’t paid her dues under the record label since being signed in 2011 and after selling more than 500 000 copies of her breakthrough album Loliwe.
Speaking in an interview with eNCA, Zahara alleged that she would be suing TS record label executives TK Nciza and Sbu Leope for reportedly robbing her of millions in royalties. Although she hasn’t opened the case yet, the Phendula hitmaker plans to first sit down with the respective parties involved in hopes that they’ll be able to amicably discuss a way forward without involving the courts.
Speaking to the Sowetan Nciza said: "Now that things are going bad she [Zahara] wants to make an excuse and point fingers."
He also added that all three of her albums - Loliwe, Phendula and Country Girl -wouldn’t have earned the amount she was claiming was owed to her. And that another large company was involved in the payout of her royalties.
Zahara claims that TS records owes her R10-30 million.
Although Zahara parted ways from the record label in question in 2017, her courage to finally speak out about her musical woes comes after five months of sobriety and an attempt to seek help.
DRUM tried to get in contact with Zahara for her comment but there was no response from her at the time of publishing.
Nciza told DRUM that TS records would be releasing a statement on the matter on Thursday afternoon.
