Gareth Cliff feels 'really stupid'

2012-03-07 10:44
Cape Town - Shock jock Gareth Cliff says he feels "really stupid" after his arrest in Pretoria on Tuesday after he was caught speeding at 182km/h in Pretoria.

Cliff was interviewed on his own 5FM breakfast show on Wednesday morning, which was hosted by stand-in DJ Rob Vember.

Cliff explained that he had been driving home from OR Tambo airport after filming Idols in Durban, hit the R21 and was pulled over by the cops who had clocked him driving at 182km/h.

'These things happen'

When asked by Vember why he was going at that speed, Cliff replied: "No one goes, 'Oh I feel like going at 182' unless they're the late Lolly Jackson. It was completely stupid and unnecessary and spent my evening with administration which I really didn't need to have to go through and I feel really stupid for having done it in the first place.

"I didn't mean to drive that fast, I didn't realise I was. But what can you do? These things happen I suppose. It's very irritating."

Speaking about the rumours that he had spent the night in jail and that he had received preferential treatment by the police, Cliff said: "I suppose when people recognise your name they're in fact more likely to make an example of you than give you special treatment."

He also praised the police for their professionalism in handling his case.

"I think the police did a very good job and I didn't at any stage feel unsafe," he told his 5FM listeners.

"I didn't feel that there was anyone there who didn't know what they were doing in the police and I have to give them, begrudgingly obviously, congratulations for a job well done."

Addressing the criticism he has received from people since the news of his arrest broke: "I see a lot of people on Facebook and Twitter getting all moral and pious and sanctimonious and I'd just like to remind them that this is not something you go out of your way to break laws for.

'Understand the seriousness of the situation'

"It's something that happens when you're driving along the highway, you're tired and you want to go home. If you don't think that's an excuse then I don't particularly care.

I'm not trying to get into anyone's good books here. I have broken the law and I must face the consequences."

Cliff is due to make an appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

When asked by Rob Vember how he felt about the jibes directed at the notoriously loose-lipped personality, Cliff replied: "There's a huge difference between taking yourself seriously and taking a situation seriously and I don't take myself seriously as some people seem to think I do so I am going to find a way to laugh at this because I do completely understand the seriousness of the situation.

"There is a distinction between the two which only an idiot would miss."

Cliff also confirmed that he will be back on air to host his 5FM show on Thursday morning.

He is also set to take part in Wednesday's Cosatu mass worker strike.

    Stupid is as Stupid does...

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 10:55

The only difference between you and Cliff is he got caught, step off your pedestal, no one cares..

      Jono - 2012-03-07 11:02

We all must act like we don’t speed and stuff...not saying it is right what he did but lets hope when he did it there wasn’t to many cars on the road if any! Driving fast is one thing and driving fast and irresponsible is another thing all on its own.

      renejupp - 2012-03-07 11:04

he himself said he was stupid?! and I don't drive at 180km/h - that's just being stupid. Glad you care enough to comment

      Kon - 2012-03-07 11:07

I am sure he touches and feels stupid every day :)

      RSole - 2012-03-07 11:21

Once a “chop” always a “chop”. Should have locked the sanctimonious prick up for the night.

      Ann - 2012-03-07 17:10

Alicia, re your comment: "I can only imagine how you felt after listening all day to the Idol Wannabees." If that is such an ordeal for the esteemed Mr Cliff, why'd he take the job (money)?

      Richard - 2012-03-07 17:48

      My point exactly.

      Christopher - 2012-03-07 21:27

Its not about digging his show...but you know when you doing 180km, it just does not pass you know you putting foot. I have said exactly what he said to a copper when I was going 150km. Anyone knows whilst driving over 140km, you realise you pushing it...

  • AGvanderWesthuizen - 2012-03-07 11:04

    Shame on you Gareth!

      TheRealWarrenB - 2012-03-07 11:08

Shame on you for doing 65 in a 60 zone. Shame on you for not stopping dead at the stopstreet. Shame on you for having that beer and driving home....

      Hallo - 2012-03-07 11:31

      @TheRealWarrenB That's a far cry from doing 182Km/h, fanboy

      TheRealWarrenB - 2012-03-07 11:41

@Hallo So do you break the law a little bit or alot? The law is the law, hater!

      Janice - 2012-03-07 12:04

Well stated Point Blank, one of the few intelligent comments made in regard to this news, go Gareth!!!

      Hallo - 2012-03-07 12:52

      Yeah, Go faster Gareth!

      George - 2012-03-07 15:39

Those cops may loose there jobs now Just look at what happened to those 2 cops who stoped one of the Gupta's

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 10:50

It's amazing the amount of justification given to this case, are you really so gullible that a celebrity can do what he likes in your book?. Geez.

  • marcus.daily3 - 2012-03-07 11:09

Should've been interviewd on "The Fresh Drive" with DJ Fresh this afternoon instead!!

  • les.cunningham1 - 2012-03-07 11:38

"Cliff also confirmed that he will be back on air to host his 5FM show on Thursday morning". Is he that sure? Hope he's right!!

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 10:51

How lovely, everyone ready to cow tow?.

  • Timothy - 2012-03-07 11:43

I agree with RSole, once a chop always a chop. Because he is an idols judge he really thinks he is above the law. They should throw all of them inside and scrap that rubbish show. It is so predictable when this idiot judges one of the contestants, samo samo.

      Janice - 2012-03-07 12:05

Stop showing your jealousy, what ever your name is...

      Gloria - 2012-03-07 21:59

Where did he mention he is above the law??? At least he admitted that it was stupid, and he will face what is coming. Shame did you not qualify for idols Timmy?

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 11:02

Janice, now who would want to be jealous of a celebrity in a third world country?. Give me a break.

  • petrolhead89 - 2012-03-07 11:44

how is the 120kmph speed limit decided any way?? so it is acceptable for a scoro scoro to do the same speed "safely" as a big merc etc.. speed limits suck and in my opinion are only there to generate income... and give the piggy's something to do(instead of fight real crime)

      Marc - 2012-03-07 12:23

I agree. Look at the Autobahn in Germany - extremely few accidents there. Speed is not the problem - road surface and driver quality is. Needless to say we have neither in SA!

  • ryan.a.riley - 2012-03-07 11:50

good to know that he's feeling like himself again.

  • johann.erasmus - 2012-03-07 11:52

    Pappa wag vir jou!

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 10:53

If qualifying for idols is the criteria by which the intelect of some here are measured, the Lord help us.

  • Jesse - 2012-03-07 11:56

What a jackass! Really cannot see what people see in Gareth Cliff! And to think people were actually tweeting "Free Gareth Cliff". What jackasses!

      Janice - 2012-03-07 12:06

You are the biggest jackASS here!!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 16:39

Each to their own Jesse... Jesse? Isn't that some kind of a disease?

      Gloria - 2012-03-07 22:01

Another one that did not qualify for idols. *sigh*

  • johann.erasmus - 2012-03-07 11:58

      RSole - 2012-03-07 14:23

Shaun would your response have been the same had it been Malema?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 16:40

@RSole?? WTF has Malema got to do with this, would you ask the same question if it was your mother or father? Same thing.... Eish.

      Shaun Koorsten - 2012-03-07 19:17

no! He is a idiot and would kill innocent people at that speed!

      Gloria - 2012-03-07 22:04

@ Shaun. And he does not need a car! ")

  • heinrich.crouse - 2012-03-07 12:22

Speeding at 180 km/h should make you feel exhilarated. Getting caught should make you feel anxious. The sanctimonious and pompous twittering that comes out of your mouth is what should make you feel stupid.

  • Marz Smith - 2012-03-07 12:29

Also not a big fan but can any of these critics honestly say they have never in their life speeded ? Yea thougt so .

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 10:55

      No I haven't. What's your point?.

  • Fikile - 2012-03-07 12:43

I particularly liked the way he took it. No demonising of cops or the law! His words:'There are consequences',sums it up. Hope other 'celebrities' learn from him!

  • thabo.vilakazi - 2012-03-07 12:47

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 16:41

So you must be one of those fat people :)

  • Trevor - 2012-03-07 12:49

The guy broke the law, as he said, let him face the music and be done with it!Absolutely POINTLESS to defend nor support the bloke, he's a big boy, sure he'll be fine!

  • RealityDan - 2012-03-07 13:08

I sure hope he takes responsibility for his actions, pleads guilty to the charge, and takes his due like a man.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 16:41

Already has, if you bother to follow up..

  • kevin.strydom1 - 2012-03-07 13:15

I think we all missed the point here - there is another f- - n season of idols! Will that sh-t-y show ever come to an end? It should be moved to DisneyXD, that is their target market after all. Think its just a space filler for multichoice on their main channel.

  • kevin.strydom1 - 2012-03-07 13:15

  • thandeka.mntambo - 2012-03-07 13:16

To admit you did wrong is always a good place to start. And for all of you who are snubbing your noses and passing nasty comments at him. Just remember when you stop over the pedestrian lines, where are we supposed to walk. Just remember it's pedestrian's right of way first not yours. Basically what I'm saying is all of you are not innocent amazing drivers. You don't drive the same way they taught you at the driving school. So stop criticising Gareth and take down a few critical notes about the way you drive.

  • Shamier - 2012-03-07 13:18

Im amazed his slow as car could do that...

      Fredster - 2012-03-07 13:42

      Wonder what he drives?

  • RealityDan - 2012-03-07 13:23

My comment on the heading: "Gareth Cliff feels 'really stupid'" FINALLY he gets it. lol

  • Fredster - 2012-03-07 13:42

If he was not arrested, would he have driven slower the next time he got back from the airport? I dont think so

  • Karen - 2012-03-07 13:45

People really, this is not even news. It happens every day - just because he is a celeb doesn't make it news so "waaadah waaadah fish paste" let's move along: there's nothing to see here.

      RealityDan - 2012-03-07 13:56

At least I see you Karen. lol But seriously ...isn't the fact that criminality [of any kind] isn't news anymore [at least according to some]indicative of a more serious problem in society?

  • Gareth - 2012-03-07 14:09

FREE CLIFF!! mornings and work is crap without him!

      Winsome - 2012-03-07 15:23

@Gareth - is your surname Cliff?

  • Ben - 2012-03-07 15:06

Oh many time doing 120km on the N1 doesn't cars rush by doing at least 180km.It's wrong..but prison. You weird bunch of nazis. Let him pay his fine and move on.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-07 16:43

      "..weird bunch of nazis." LMAO!!

      Jacqui - 2012-03-08 10:57

Bunch of nazis!!!!. Speak for yourself.

  • lorrainesuh - 2012-03-07 15:52

  • Ann - 2012-03-07 17:07

Reminds me of an old Farmer Brown chicken ad: "They TASTE so good, 'cos they EAT so good". Go figure.

  • Jdcptza - 2012-03-07 17:09

Gareth Cliff is really stupid, he could have caused the death of someone.

  • Richard - 2012-03-07 17:47

Jono it's your thinking that kills people. Gareth Cliff is an opinionated idiot. Too stupid to realise how dangerous speeding is.

  • Monica - 2012-03-07 18:31

Better seeing Gareth Cliff on the Most Read list of News24 than Malema - well done Gareth you finally got rid of him :)

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-03-08 00:31

I was thinking the same thing- more comments too. Jummmyyyy!

  • Nick - 2012-03-07 19:29

Gareth Cliff, this is a great way of looking at the situation. I appreciate the candor and accepting the responsibility. More celebs should be like this.

  • Chappies ZA - 2012-03-07 20:07

I am amzed that the cops did not want a bribe !!! Double thumbs up!!!

      francois.delange - 2012-03-08 08:16

They couldn't, the TV cameras was there.

  • Luiz - 2012-03-07 20:53

You are really stupid...and keep it up.

  • Charmaine - 2012-03-07 20:54

Do not stress Gareth, this happens to many of us. Take care.

  • Luiz - 2012-03-07 20:56

I think that you were driving a bit slow, next time.. try hitting 240 km/h.

  • Nurse - 2012-03-07 21:00

He's a total chop with a big fat mouth. There's a BIG difference between getting a speeding ticket for doing 80 km/h in a 60 zone and doing 182 km/h. Most normal people would never be so foolish and stupid to travel at that speed. And he's being all defensive? FIRE HIM 5FM. HE IS NOT A ROLE MODEL. BOOOOOO

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-03-08 00:32

You are wrong Nurse. Doing 182km on a bleak stretch of road with no one in sight is only dangerous to yourself. Doint 80km in a residential area is criminal.

  • Gerhardus - 2012-03-07 21:12

how can a stupid person feel stupid? it's like a homeless person feel homeless.

  • house.veternz - 2012-03-07 23:01

i feel that garenth cliff would make a great president, because i know that leader are surpose to lead by example and he showed his listens that he was wrong ETC, IF ONLY THERE WHERE MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU and less "JAY-Z&JUJU"

  • Wilma Crous - 2012-03-07 23:54

Go Gareth!! He was driving a new Range Rover. I'd also drive fast with that car. A crime of passion, I'd say!! Haha!! It's easy to drive 180km/hour with a powered car. Had a Peugeot 406 and it gave me endless problems but heck what a ride. This car flew & I'd easily go 180km/hour when the road was traffic free. So don't go judging. We've all done it, not often but we have ....

  • Wilma Crous - 2012-03-08 00:12

Love Idols!!! If you love music, you gotta love Idols!!! I hate sport. I hate self centered, egotistical sport men but hell each to his own!! Live & let live!!! And ... Gareth Cliff has achieved so much for such a young guy, give a little credit, where credit is due!!! Long live Idols & Gareth Cliff & Driving fast cars, real fast!!

  • Peter - 2012-03-08 03:54

      arthurbrigg - 2012-03-08 09:49

You've obviously got a poo car!

  • brionyl.french - 2012-03-08 05:06

Why do they make vehicles to go over the fast limit thats like giving a child a bowl of sweets and saying dont eat them... Comeone

  • phoenix3670 - 2012-03-08 06:07

Hi all, I think Gareth is a human being just like the rest of us, and as human beings, we make mistakes - we are not perfect. I can fully understand him saying he was tired and just wanted to get home and didn't realise the speed that he was driving. I don't believe that it has anything to do with thinking one is "above the law" or anything else. PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN'T THROW STONES!!!

  • Johann - 2012-03-08 07:48

feel stoopid because he got caught!! ARROGANT LITTLE PR1K

  • francois.delange - 2012-03-08 08:14

Well at least he admitted it, takes responsibility for it and is dealing with the consequences. He has not appointed a team of lawyers trying to proof his innocence. It is well known that a certain judge was stupidly drunk, crashed into a wall, were tested, found guilty and still pleads innocent.

  • arthurbrigg - 2012-03-08 09:46

I don't listen to the radio so I could care less about Gareth Cliff, but at least the guy owns up to his stupidity and isn't trying to fob it off with some "intellectual" excuse. The way they design these top of the range cars now a days you really can't feel the difference between 120 and 180 - if you're tired and don't check the speedo it can easily happen. As for all the self-righteous comments - I'll bet you all had a speeding fine at least once in your life, so get over yourselves.

  • Ant138 - 2012-03-09 16:10

headline should have read "Gareth Cliff IS really stupid!"

  • DeeGeeBee - 2012-03-11 12:54

He broke tha law, is facing the consequences, and that is that, why do people feel the need to rip him to shreds, yes, he can be an ass sometimes, but so can we, the only difference is that he uses a more public platform to do it, but at the end of the day, he is still a human being! STOP being so damn judgmental. Focus on improving you own lives, and let this be a lesson, klaar, stop with the snide remarks ffs.
