SINGER Vusi Nova had no idea his hit single, As’phelelanga, would take radio stations and fans by storm. He talks to Move! about the song, his quest to find love and his friendship with media personality, Somizi Mhlongo.

AS’PHELELANGA

The single has been deemed by many on social media as the song of the year. Vusi, born Vusumzi Nongxa, says the response to the song has surprised him and he is overwhelmed. “The feedback has been amazing. I feel more than humbled by the love and support I have received, not only for As’phelelanga but also for my album, Manyan-nyan,” he says. According to Vusi, the song was inspired by legends who are gone but not forgotten. He says some of these artists, like Brenda Fassie, are the reason he wanted to get into music to begin with. When the award-winning singer first heard his song, As’phelelanga, on radio he was livid. “That was not the song we were trying to push at the time. I was unhappy that the team was not sticking to the plan and worried that it might mess things up,” he says. This experience has taught Vusi that fans want what they want because the song has now become an overnight success.

A STOLEN SONG

As As’phelelanga got more airplay, Maskandi artist, Celazimnike Mtshali, claimed that Vusi stole the song from him. But Vusi dismissed the claims. “It’s nonsense. We grew up singing the song and the song is in the public domain. I researched the song. I have never said I owned the song, I just rearranged it and the rearranged version is mine,” he tells Move!.

FINDING LOVE

A few months ago, the I’d Rather Go Blind singer went on national television and admitted that he is searching for love. He tells Move! that he was in a five-year relationship and unfortunately it ended two years ago. “I’m still searching for love. I’m the kind of person who likes being in a relationship and want something serious,” he says. Vusi says it is hard for him to get into a relationship because he is well-known. “I don’t want someone who sees me as ‘Vusi Nova’. I want them to look past that and see me as Vusimuzi. It is hard for some people to look past me as a singer and I’m not trying to date a fan,” he says firmly.

FRIENDSHIP WITH SOMIZI

Vusi and entertainer Somizi have been friends since 2005. At some point in their friendship, the pair sparked dating rumours. “We met and we just clicked,” says Vusi, adding that, “We are tight and I can tell him everything. We trust each other and he knows everything about me.” Vusi says he has never entertained the rumours because he is not bothered by people’s thoughts on their friendship. “We know what we are,” he says.
