The African Independent Congress (AIC) says it will hit the ANC "where it hurts" after it abstained from voting in the motion of no confidence in the mayor of Ekurhuleni.
This decision gave the opposition the numbers to oust the AIC's Sivuyile Ngodwana as mayor on Thursday.
Ngodwana said he was surprised by the ANC's decision, as he was seen joking and holding hands with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi before the council sitting.
