The police's Tactical Response Team supported by the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and at least one helicopter from the South African Air Force on Sunday swooped on Bishop Lavis in Cape Town hunting for Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear's killer.

Kinnear's murder has sent shockwaves through the Bishop Lavis community and the police. He was intimately involved in various sensitive investigations, including the murder of Cape Town lawyer Pete Mihalik. Kinnear had received a number of death threats in the past, and was under armed police guard until his protection was withdrawn in December.

But Caryn Dolley, an expert on gang wars in Cape Town and author of The Enforcers: Inside Cape Town’s Deadly Nightclub Battles, said continued police protection may have countered any threats.
