6 documentaries that prove that truth is more tragic than fiction

Cape Town - With crime doccies like these, who needs fictional movies or series? Watch them on internet TV for a hard-hitting dose of reality.

1. Life & Death Row S1-2 (Showmax)

Step into the harrowing world of life and death in the justice system. From profiling people on death row to the struggle between guilt and innocence in the courts, this BBC series goes where few ever dare to. Not for sensitive viewers!

2. Fallen (Showmax)

Every day police officers put themselves between us and the criminals trying to cripple our communities. It's dangerous work and can cost them their lives. This documentary takes a look at that ultimate sacrifice.

3. Peace Officer (Showmax)

Winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience awards at SXSW, this is the story of William “Dub” Lawrence, a former sheriff who established and trained Utah’s first SWAT team, only to see that same unit kill his son-in-law in a controversial standoff 30 years later. Dub obsessively uses his own investigative skills to uncover the truth in officer-involved shootings in his community.

4. Surviving R Kelly (DStv Now)

For the first time ever, we hear from the women who have survived the singer's alleged abuse in this six-part documentary series.

5. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (Netflix)

His creepy smile will freak you out more and more as you learn about Ted Bundy's horrific murders during the 1970s. He was educated, good-looking, arrogant and charming - nothing like the killers that came before him - with the frightening ability to fool everyone around him.

6. Abducted in Plain Sight (Netflix)

When Jan Broberg was 12, she asked her parents to let her go horseback riding with Robert Berchtold, their neighbour, a respected churchgoer and father of five. She didn’t return - Berchtold drugged and kidnapped her and drove her to Mexico. Five weeks later, the FBI found Jan. That should be where this story ends. Instead, not only was Berchtold welcomed back into Jan’s family’s life, but he managed to abduct her a second time, only two years later.
