Cape Town - Popular Idols SA runner up, Thami Shobede has died following a long illness, Mzansi Magic has confirmed.

The 31-year-old singer died this morning at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

Speaking to DRUM, the Mzansi Magic confirmed the tragic news.

"As Mzansi Magic, we are saddened by the passing of our former Idols SA contestant Thami Shobede. Thami was a very talented musician with lots still to offer to the music industry. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed," says Philly Kubheka, HOD, PR and Publicity for Local Entertainment Channels.

The Shobede family is still in shock, some family members are still on their way to Gauteng, Mzanis Magic publicist Irvin Pooe told us.

"It’s so sad, he had such a promising future. He really will be missed," he said.

According to Sowetan, in 2017 the 31-year-old had a brush with death after a road rage incident turned dangerous and saw the singer and his friends being shot at while driving away after an altercation but luckily, no one was shot.

Thami impressed fans with his velvet voice on season 12 of Idols SA, where he emerged as the runner up to Noma Khumalo. The singer went on to release singles such as Sthandwa and Angisajoli
