The 3 worst performances on Idols last night

Cape Town – The top 8 girls of Idols SA had a lot to live up to when they hit the stage for the second round of live spectaculars at Pretoria’s State Theatre.

Dressed to the nines the girls started off the show with a shaky group performance of Kelly Clarkson’s, Heartbeat Song.

Just like the guys they choose songs that have charted on Channel O. But this time around most of the contestants' song choices let them down. We weren’t too wild about their choices and neither were the viewers. The girls had mixed reviews from both the judges and the fans on social media.

Here are the 3 worst performances of the night:

Fresh off #beyday Amanda Antony took on a very big song by a very big artist. We’ll give her props for attempting a Bey song but her performance was sorely lacking. It’s a great song to sing along to in the car or in the shower, but on a big stage like this, not a good song choice. We totally agree with Somizi there are certain artists who, if you’re going to do their songs, "you need your ancestors next to you".

Bridgett Leahy took on Meghan Trainor’s, Lips are Moving. We get why she chose it: it’s a fun catchy tune, but her performance was too High School Musical and too cute. She was also off key. Randall commented, "The one thing you have on your side is that you’re quirky. But if you have that card to play, you’ve got to play it. You’ve got to get in there!" he urged her.

Shenay O Brien really took that saying go big or go home to heart. Taking on one of the biggest summer songs, Bang Bang by Jessie J and company. It started off kinda well, but went downhill fast when she hit the chorus as the falsetto totally failed her. Gareth thought this performance was the one that "jumped the shark" for Shenay. "The vocals did not work for me," he said.

Here's what viewers had to say on Twitter:

Voting for the Top 18 girls opened at the start of the live Spectacular show and closes on Tuesday night, 8 September, at 22:00.

The four girls with the most votes and the four guys with the most votes will be safe. The four girls and four guys with the fewest votes will be up for elimination, and the Idols SA judging panel will save two contestants (no matter from which group they are) to make up the Idols SA Season 11 Top 10.
