WHAT IT'S ABOUT:

When three suburban moms get tired of trying to make ends meet, they decide it's time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store. But when the manager catches a glimpse of one of them and the loot is far more than they expected, it doesn't take long for the three best friends to realise the perfect getaway will be harder than they think.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

The girls are back with more shenanigans this season, and things certainly are getting worse for them rather than getting any better. Season two opens where the last one left off, with Rio holding Dean hostage because Beth got him arrested. And while the police are off their scent, they still have Rio problems, and they still have FBI Agent Turner looking at them. Tenacious as a pit bull, Agent Turner can’t shake his suspicions about the trio and turns his attention to Ruby this season instead of Beth.

A new and welcome addition to this season is Noah, played by one of my faves, Sam Huntington (if you haven’t seen Being Human yet, you should get on that). Noah is the new manager at the grocery store Annie works at and is a much nicer human being than Boomer was. But Noah isn’t everything that he seems, and despite them falling for each other, it doesn’t end the way we all want it to. But it’s great to see Annie in a somewhat healthy relationship for once.

There are a lot of twists and turns this season, and we learn a bit more about Rio, and he finally hooks up with Beth, something that fans have been clamouring for throughout the first season. But that too doesn’t end in a good way. But what was to be expected?

Beth really grows as a character this season, especially when it comes to standing up to Dean, but surprisingly Dean becomes a half-decent human being too when he’s forced to take part in family life. But Beth also grows as a crime boss this season doing things that Annie and Ruby don’t feel comfortable with. Their motivation in the first season was getting out of a dire financial situation. But during this season they are grappling with the moral dilemmas of their secret lives as criminals

There’s a big rift between Beth and Ruby this season. With FBI Agent Turner threatening her husband, she has to choose between keeping her husband out of jail or betraying Beth. And she very nearly does but confesses to Beth instead driving a wedge between the two.

A big “what the actual heck?” this season is Mary Pat. Girl, what are you doing with your life? Mary Pat is a mess and keeps bringing it to the trio’s door when they have their own messes to clear up. A lot of season two seems to be clearing up the damage done in season 1 and Mary Pat is one of those messes that keeps on giving.

The season ends on a sort of high for the girls. Their Rio problem is solved (or so they think) and the FBI is off their case. And what do you think Beth does with this newfound freedom? Does she go back to a quiet suburban life? Absolutely not. She’s come up with another crazy scheme to take over where Rio left off, but Annie and Ruby don’t seem to be as enthusiastic as she is. But we’ll see where season 3 takes them.
