Modern Family fans are mourning the passing of the sitcom’s beloved dog, Stella.
The French bulldog, whose real name was Beatrice, passed away just a few days after production wrapped on the series’ final season. Her cause of death is still unclear at this stage.
She played the role of the Pritchett-Delgado’ family pet since season four.
A spokesperson for Disney Television Studios confirmed the news with a statement from the ABC series’ co-creator Steve Levitan.
“While she was occasionally a major diva who made unreasonable demands and often questioned her motivation, most of the time Beatrice was a delightful and lovable presence on the Modern Family set,” Levitan says.
“We’ll all miss that adorable scrunched-up face,” he added. “Enjoy doggie heaven, sweet Beatrice/Stella.”
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell Pritchett in the show, posted his condolences on Twitter. “Rest in peace sweet Beatrice. We love you so much,” he tweeted next to a photo on set with the dog.
Fans of the show flocked to Twitter to express their sadness, admitting they’re not handling it well and it was just another blow to an already difficult 2020.
TV critics have described Stella as the most famous small-screen dog since the iconic Eddie the Jack Russell from Frasier.
