Cape Town - Since their wedding in 2011, Prince William and his wife, Catherine (both 36), have held the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. But that will change after Queen Elizabeth (92) dies.

On her death the queen will be succeeded by her eldest son, Prince Charles (69), who currently bears the title Prince of Wales, which is granted to the British heir to the throne.

Therefore, when Charles becomes king, his eldest son, William, will become Prince of Wales, and as William’s wife, Catherine will then be known as the Princess of Wales, according to Express Daily.

Charles was named the Prince of Wales at the age of nine in 1958, but only formally received the title 11 years later at Caernarfon Castle in 1969.

His marriage to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 meant she received the title Princess of Wales, which she kept after their divorce.

Charles wed Camilla Parker Bowles (70) in 2005, but she opted not to use the title Princess of Wales because it was popularly associated with Diana, who died in 1997 aged 36.

Instead Camilla opted to be known as the Duchess of Cornwall, The Mirror reports.

If Catherine does decide to use the title, it could be seen as a touching tribute to her late mother-in-law.

But it’s unlikely that William’s brother, Prince Harry (33), and his new bride, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (36), will receive new titles after the queen’s death.

The Sun reports the couple are too far down the line of succession as Harry is behind William and Catherine’s children, Prince George (4), Princess Charlotte (3) and Prince Louis (2 months).
