THE STRUGGLE

Cry Freedom (1987)

Directed by:
Richard Attenborough
Starring: Denzel Washington, Kevin Kline, John Matshikiza, Penelope Wilton

Based on the true story of black consciousness leader Steve Biko's friendship with liberal Daily Dispatch editor Donald Woods during his final years. Banned by the SA government, Biko was not allowed to meet with anyone outside of his immediate family, nor publish any writings nor speak in public. After his death in police custody (filmed with horrific intensity) Woods risked his life by writing a book, Biko, which exposed the truth of Biko's fate and the effects of apartheid on South Africa's black majority. The movie was not officially banned in SA upon its release, though cinemas showing the movie were subject to bomb threats and screenings were often interrupted.
