Cape Town - If there are any doubts that Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie is going to tone it down after the jaw-dropping madness of The Dark Knight, then this short teaser trailer should put those doubts to rest.
Recalling this Batman's origins with flashbacks to the literal 'rise' of the dark knight in Batman Begins (2005), the trailer seems to be setting itself up as an epic conclusion to the trilogy.
FIRST LOOK: The Dark Knight Rises poster
In a particularly chilling scene, Bruce Wayne's (played by Christian Bale) disembodied voice debates the role Batman still has to play in keeping the peace with a bed-ridden Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), the police commisioner of Gotham. Last time we saw him he destroyed the bat signal at the end of the last movie. When we next see him in The Dark Knight Rises, he is in hospital and looks gravely ill.
The real talking point from the trailer will almost certainly revolve around the unmistakable quick shots of a hulking Tom Hardy as Bane, Batman's nemesis this time around.
The Dark Knight Rises is currently in production and is set for release on July 20, 2012.
