Idris Elba: More than a black James Bond

Los Angeles - Idris Elba would be interested in playing James Bond.

The Thor actor has confirmed he is willing to partake in the long running franchise about the British spy, but would not want to do so just to be the first black Bond.

He told US radio station NPR's Morning Edition: "It's a rumour. It's a very old rumour. My dad and I were talking about this the other day. I would do it, but I don't want to be called the first black James Bond. Do you understand what I'm saying?

"Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond."

Currently the character is being played by Craig - who is back for his third movie to be directed by Sam Mendes - but it is not known if he will reprise the part for a fourth time.

Idris has a number of films set for release in the coming years, including the eagerly anticipated Alien prequel Prometheus alongside Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, as well as Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
