Jerry Bruckheimer wants Top Gun sequel

Los Angeles - Jerry Bruckheimer is still hopeful for a Top Gun sequel.

The movie producer has revealed he still has regular discussions with star Tom Cruise about making a follow-up to the seminal 1986 film which shot the actor to fame.

Speaking at the Produced By conference over the weekend, he said: "For 30 years we've been trying to make a sequel and we're not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom and Paramount are still interested in making it.

'People refer to Tom as Maverick'

The producer added that Cruise is still identified as his jet fighter pilot character Maverick despite his long and varied career since the film.

He said: "What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick.

"It's something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we'll get it made."

Meanwhile, the top Hollywood producer - who is also behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise - also hopes his new production, The Lone Ranger, which reunites him with Johnny Depp, will spawn a franchise of its own, but nothing has been decided yet.

He explained: "It's always up to the audience. If the audience likes the movie then Disney will come to me and we'll make another or it will be a one-off."

The Lone Ranger, which also stars Armie Hammer and Helena Bonham Carter, is due for release in July.
