Los Angeles - Titles and release dates for Peter Jackson's two-part adaptation of The Hobbit have been announced.
New Line Cinema, Warner Bros Pictures and MGM announced jointly that the first of the two films will be titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will be released on December 14, 2012.
The second film, titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is set for release a year later year, on December 13, 2013.
The adventures chronicled in The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from Smaug, a terrifying dragon.
The cast
Ian McKellen will reprise his role of Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, while British actor Martin Freeman will take on the central role of Bilbo Baggins.
Other familiar faces from The Lord of the Rings trilogy who will reprise their roles include: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.
New additions to The Hobbit include US actor Lee Pace who will star as Elven King Thranduil, the father of Bloom's character Legolas, and Stephen Fry who was recently confirmed to play The Master of Laketown.
Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
