Juanita trumps Lady Gaga once again

Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer Juanita du Plessis released her new album less than a week ago and it has already taken the number one spot on the official South African top 20 on Monday.

Du Plessis's new CD, Wees lig, has only been available in stores since the weekend and sold so well that it swept away all competition - including international artists like Lady Gaga.

No other album release has achieved such a remarkable feat before. The official top 20 album chart is based solely on in-store CD sales. Sales at concerts and online downloads are not taken into account.

'Great news'

Du Plessis was at the hairdresser on Monday when Beeld phoned her with the good news. Her husband and manager, Doepie, said he was "overcome with joy".

"Juanita worked very hard on the new CD. The Lord is good to us. This is great news that you are giving us."

Another three Afrikaans singers gained a spot on the chart with their new albums within days of their release.

Andriëtte's Vat my hoër landed in 15th place, Chris Chameleon's As jy weer skryf  entered at No 17 and Elizma Theron's Op pad na jou in 18th place.

Snotkop's latest, Ek laaik van jou, made a huge leap from last week's No 19 to 8 on the list.

International artists had to make way for the new SA releases with Lady Gaga's Born This Way falling down to the No 4 spot.

Du Plessis also beat Lady Gaga when she was crowned the top selling South African artist for 2010 with her album Engel van my hart.
